Many variables go into your ability to present effectively to your audience. These include your visuals, preparation prior to the event, the message you deliver, and the techniques you employ. Your presentation skills are to a certain extend determined by your personality and experience, but that certainly does not mean you can't move the needle by learning more skills and working on the skills you already have. There are many resources available to help you out. These include looking to those whose presentation skills are off the charts - people who have pioneered new approaches.
Beyond your core presentation skills, there are numerous presentation tips you can follow to make to your preparation and delivery that much more effective. These go all the way back to the strategy you employ for your presentation. This can be as simple as how you position yourself on the stage during the presentation. But presentation tips are a double-edged sword. If you consider too many you can become overwhelmed, but you certainly ignore the advice of others at your peril.
You can think of communication skills as the parent of presentations. It is often good to think of your presentation skills within this broader context to help you remember that your presentation is in fact communication. More specficially, it helps to remember not to broadcast to your audience. While you may be doing 90% of the talking, there is most definitely a degree of feedback that your audience will provide. This can be via Q&A, Tweeting during your presentation, their body language, blogging after your presentation, and the actions they take after your presentation (i.e., checking out your website). Just remember that these are people who do not want to just be presented to, they want to be communicated with.
